Life Is Art Showcases South Florida at The Shops at Boca Center on April 30th, 2011

A full day of art, music, fashion, performance and more!

Right now, South Florida is one of the most exciting and dynamic emerging art scenes in the world. With numerous art walks popping up all over the area, many mega art fairs and festivals, and the largest art week in the world, the eye of the art world is focused squarely on South Florida. Yet, much of the local talent is left out of the explosion of artistic opportunity. South Florida is the home of many, many truly talented artists, all with their own unique voice and style, but it seems as if, in our rush to be a big-time player on the world art stage, we sometimes forget what we have right here.

Life Is Art, through the support of The Shops at Boca Center and StarMar Events, inaugurates the first Life Is Art Boca Center South Florida Artist Fair to celebrate and showcase what our area has to offer. This is a day filled with art and entertainment, featuring dozens of accomplished south Florida artists of all types, from emerging to experienced to world-renowned. The event also includes live music, fashion shows and even circus performances, all for free!

“This is a great way for The Shops at Boca Center to give back to the community,” states Candace Goldstein, manager of the center. The Shops at Boca Center, an upscale luxury shopping and fine dining center, is donating the space for the art fair. James Echols, co-founder of Life Is Art, said, “We are very excited about this opportunity to expand our mission of supporting the south Florida art community.” Life Is Art is a non-profit founded in January of 2009 that is dedicated to providing opportunity for south Florida artists. All of this is made possible through the support of StarMar Events; a comprehensive Event consulting, production and management firm. “When Life Is Art approached us with their needs for this event, we were more than happy to contribute to such a worthy cause and organization” states Marlene Quincoces, Chief Planning Officer.

This will be a full day of arts, culture and entertainment. With over forty visual artists represented, there will be a feast for the eyes. However, it does not stop there. Fab C Productions is producing two fashion shows and will be showcasing several south Florida based designers with cool vintage fashions. Motivational Edge, a music non-profit serving children, is bringing their student band, SoMeTiMeS Y to perform.

To tantalize your taste buds, Barefoot Wine & Bubbly is doing a free tasting for all attendees. Renda Writer, publisher of WeMerge Magazine, is going to be doing a live poetry reading. As if all this were not enough, there is even going to be a circus performance! Rainbow Circus, a premiere south Florida performance troupe, is going to be performing live acts of amazement. The day tops off with live music by Krisp, a hot local band playing your favorites and original numbers. DJ Silvio will be supplying the tunes all day to create a perfect background for the event.

This is truly an event not to be missed. The Shops at Boca Center are located at 5150 Town Center Circle in Boca Raton, FL 33486. The fair is taking place in the lush courtyard, surrounding the fountain. It is happening Saturday, April 30th, 2011 from 10:00am to 7:00pm, or later. Admission is free and open to the public. Hello Everyone!

As you know, we submitted several proposals to the Knight Arts Challenge, nine in total. All nine were turned down. The Knight Foundation received nearly 1000 ideas and I am sure they picked some awesome ones. We look forward to congratulating all the winners.

However, this does not stop us at all. I am going to post all nine ideas here on our blog because we still plan to carry them all out, eventually! It may take us a bit longer, it may cost a bit more, but these are all plans that we think would be very beneficial to our arts and community. So, I am going to put them all here so you can have an idea of some of our goals. Your input and ideas are always welcome, so please feel free to post in the comments.

1) Life Is Art South Florida Featured Art Fair Series
Life Is Art proposes to produce a series of art fairs throughout the year to promote the arts in south Florida, including a special event during the massive Art Basel week in early December. The reason for the grant is to keep the costs low to participating artists and to attendees. Each fair will take place in a different part of the area.

The arts are growing fast in south Florida, but much of the amazing local talent is being left behind. Also, research shows that the arts provide significant economic impact.

Each show will be significantly promoted through efficient marketing and public relations practices to maximize the exposure of the artists and use of the funds. The use of community resources and in-kind local sponsors will also be utilized to the fullest extent.

Every show will be open-call, juried by a group of experienced jurists and art professionals. Many art forms will be included, e.g. visual, performance, dance, music, film, design, etc.

2) After school cultural tour youth art program
Appreciation of the arts starts young. This proposal is to create an after school program for area youth to get them interested and excited about the arts. On a regular basis (depending on funding level and availability) we will organize an outing to a local gallery, museum or other cultural institution for young people and their parents. Target would be at least once per week.

At each event there will be interesting interactive activities related to the venue, and a chance to meet and speak with local artists, curators, gallerists, and other art professionals. The work at the institution will presented in a manner to make it interesting and exciting to young minds.

Enrollment will be open to any student, given size limitations of the location. Special effort will be given to promote the program to disadvantaged youth. This will allow the youth to not only learn a love of the arts, but also to be introduced to the cultural diversity of the area.

3) South Florida Online Arts Wikipedia
Where do you go when you want a comprehensive guide to the arts in south Florida? What does Google love? What is SEO and why does the south Florida arts community need it?

If you want to be seen in the 21st century, you MUST be seen on the web. South Florida needs a website that maximizes our arts exposure on the web. Nothing does that better than a Wikipedia.

By providing a platform where artists, arts business, and arts organizations can manage their own representation in one, comprehensive website, we can provide a one-stop easy-to-use location for people to learn about the south Florida arts scene. It also provides a simple method for the participants to manage entry.

The Wikipedia software is extremely Google-friendly (and other search engines), meaning that our arts people will show up more likely on arts related searches from around the world, improving the visibility of what we have to offer.

The funding provides this free or low-cost to all the arts people in south Florida.

4) South Florida Arts Council
There are many organizations and individuals working towards the betterment of the arts in south Florida. There seems to be a lot of overlap and lack of coordination between these efforts, though. An overarching professionals group could help everyone coordinate activities and share resources. “Got Milk?”

The idea is to create an organization that assists all the organizations in south Florida do what they do better. In addition, resources could be pooled to create larger campaigns.

This would be a membership organization, but the price of membership would be kept as low as possible, and based on a sliding scale based on an individual’s or organization’s ability to pay.

The goal would be to include all the organizations and institutions in south Florida, as well as individual artists, curators, and collectors. Many other areas have on arts council, it is time south Florida did, too.

5) South Florida Music Showcase
There have been a few abortive attempts to host a music event showcasing the talent in south Florida, but none of them have really gone anywhere. So much amazing music has come out of and into Miami in the past 100 years, that it is a shame we do not respect our local scene more.

There is still a large pool of amazing talent in south Florida. What we really need is a good three-day festival featuring the great bands, musicians, DJs, and performers of our area. Throw in a few big names to get the media on it, and you would have a show.

Funding would be used to subsidize gate prices for the early years in order to generate more interest. Significant effort would be put into marketing and promotion in order to ensure good crowd.

Music of all genres would be included in order to allow as many local musicians to participate as possible. Not only could we have festival style, but we have so many clubs and bars that we can include. So good for the local economy, as well as the arts.

6) South Florida Arts Presentation Venue
ArtCenter South and Bakehouse Arts Center are both great institutions. But, as the south Florida arts scene grows, these two organizations are not enough to serve the needs of a growing number of artists. We propose to open a new space that is not only dedicated to providing low cost studio/gallery space for artists, but also to market those artists, as well as artists from across south Florida.

Included would be a number of personal studio/gallery spaces that artists could lease for low cost, as well as larger gallery/performance spaces wherein big shows would take place to showcase not only the artists in the onsite studios, but artists from all over south Florida.

This space could be used to not only showcase visual artists, but artists of all disciplines, music, dance, performance, fashion, etc. This space would be focused on using all media available to promote participating artists to the greatest extent.

7) This is SoFla! Long-term Introductory Residency Program for Non-residents
This program has been suggested to us by several people, artists and arts lovers. Host a long-term residency program for out-of-town artists to introduce them thoroughly to the south Florida arts scene.

The idea is reasonably simle. Target mid- or full- career artists from around the world who are influential in their local region. Invite them for two-year residencies in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Include free or reduced-cost living space and gallery-studio space. Work with local organizations to integrate the visiting artists in with the local artists so they are fully introduced to the south Florida talent.

Host an opening/receiving reception welcoming the artists-in-residence to the area, introducing them to the local arts community. The goal of this program is that by immersing artists from around the in the south Florida arts scene, they will then take that information back to their home with them and spread the word about our wonderful art scene.

8) South Florida to the World – Worldwide Artist Program
A program to support taking south Florida artists to arts communities around the world that could not otherwise afford it, hosting them at art fairs and holding events featuring the south Florida artists.

There are many extremely good artists in south Florida. But, because our scene is still immature, many of them are not making the money that they deserve, and so cannot travel to other cities to represent the south Florida art scene.

The idea is to take groups of deserving artists to other cities to represent them in arts events at those cities. Also to produce art shows featuring the artists in conjunction with arts organizations, galleries or museums in those cities. Think, “Magic City Featured Art Show in Paris”, with 8 to 10 artists from south Florida.

The funds would be used to subsidize the artists attendance, as well as publicize the program and events, and to cover production costs to produce superlative events to showcase the artists.

9) The Knight ARTS Awards – Featuring… ART!
The Knight Arts Challenge is a wonderful program. The awards ceremony is an excellent event that hosts many of the local arts luminaries. There is one thing that the ceremony is missing. Actual art.

Why is there no art represented at the awards ceremony? It would be a perfect opportunity to showcase some of our local talent. Life Is Art proposes to fix this. We will produce an arts showcase to go along with the awards ceremony. It will include local artists of many disciplines, including visual, performance, musical, design, dance and theatrical.

The art showcase would take place alongside and in conjuction with the awards ceremony, making a real arts awards event. Imagine visual arts filling the foyer and the performing arts taking place before and after the actual awards.

Funding requested for this proposal = $0.00. That’s right, we are asking for no money, just permission to turn the arts awards into an awesome arts event.

James Echols

Knight Foundation Names Vice President of Arts
Renowned Arts Philanthropist and Contemporary Collector
Dennis Scholl Will Expand Knight’s Cultural Arts Program Nationwide
Dennis Scholl , Miami program director for the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, will take on a new role as vice president / arts to develop a nationwide cultural arts program for Knight.
Scholl, a longtime arts advocate who joined Knight in 2009, will work with leaders in key communities around the country, where the Knight brothers owned newspapers, to fund innovative cultural programs that enhance community engagement. Those Knight communities are: Akron, Ohio; Charlotte, N.C.; Detroit, Mich.; Macon, Ga.; Miami, Fla.; Philadelphia, Pa.; San Jose, Calif.; and St. Paul, Minn.
In Miami, Scholl currently leads the Knight Arts Challenge, a $40 million initiative to unite South Florida through the arts. The program includes $20 million in endowment grants to leading institutions, plus a community-wide competition for the best ideas to transform the local cultural scene. Finalists in the contest’s third round will be named in May.
“Dennis’s passion for the arts, as well as his experience and success as an entrepreneur and art collector, makes him the perfect person to expand Knight’s support of the arts nationwide,” said Alberto Ibargüen, president and CEO of Knight Foundation. “He will identify opportunities for cultural enrichment and offer new and effective strategies to use the arts to inform and engage communities.”
Scholl’s first priority will be to visit Knight communities on a “listening tour,” meeting with cultural leaders and representatives from cultural institutions and arts councils to begin to determine needs and encourage cultural momentum in targeted areas.
“The expansion of Knight Foundation’s arts program is a great opportunity to use the arts to enrich people’s lives and unify entire communities,” Scholl said. “I’ve already witnessed the uplifting impact a vibrant arts scene can have on communities, even in a difficult economic environment.”
From philanthropist to art collector to filmmaker, Scholl’s role in the arts is broad. A renowned contemporary art collector for more than 30 years, Scholl has led local and national philanthropic efforts in the visual arts. Scholl served as founding chair of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum’s Photography Committee, the Tate Modern’s American Acquisitions Committee and the Miami Art Museum’s Collectors Council. He has also served on the boards of the Aspen Art Museum, the Miami Museum of Contemporary Art, and as chair of Locust Projects, an alternative art space in Miami. Since its inception, Scholl has also served on the Host Committee of Art Basel Miami Beach.
Scholl earned a regional Emmy nomination in 2009 as a cultural correspondent for Plum TV, a resort-based television network with eight stations across the United States.
A founder of the international wine venture Betts & Scholl, he previously practiced law, worked as a C.P.A. and restored 20 historic Art Deco properties on South Beach, contributing to the island’s rebirth.
Scholl received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Florida International University and a law degree from the University of Miami.

Received this call for help from Bibi Andrade. It is originally from the Wallflower Gallery. For those that do not know, the Wallflower has been an alternative culture bastion for the past 13 years in downtown Miami. They are in danger of closing down permanently, if something is not done. The building is being torn down and they need to move. They are having an organizational meeting on February 1, 2010. If you can help, please do what you can.

The Wallflower Gallery Organizational Meeting 02-01-10
WE NEED TO MOVE!!

Hello, Everybody, how’s it going? I wanted to reach out and see what we can do together to save and revitalize The Wallflower Gallery. This is a group project, so if we want to have an artistic and creative community space in Miami, The Wallflower Gallery can be that platform.

I was recently informed by the landlord that he plans to tear down the building as soon as possible – he mentioned April, but I think we can delay it if we can get some money to him. This money will buy us the time to transition smoothly.

For almost 13 years, The Wallflower Gallery has stood as a place for musicians to play, for poets to share their poems, for visual artists to display their pieces, for independent film makers to showcase films and videos, for actors to act, as well as host a larger assortment of creative showcases. In addition, we have worked with a variety of community organizations to help with local issues, programs for young people, alternative transportation, animal rights, environmental causes, marijuana laws reform, secular humanism, electoral campaigns and many other causes. Even now as we are struggling to keep the business alive, we are giving support to the people of Haiti and we have hosted a collection event – overall it is about compassion. Now it is time to focus a campaign on The Wallflower Gallery.

I am calling for an Organizational Meeting on Monday, February 1 – 7:00 p.m. to discuss what we can do to bring ideas together. I will lay out the details of the situation and see what we as a group can do with suggestions. Bring your cash, checkbooks and credit cards to contribute some financial support. Donations can also go through PayPal on our website – www.wallflowergallery.com – other information will be posted there as well. If we don’t get the financial resources to make this happen, it won’t work.

Now the large task at hand is to generate money to cover the expenses in the current location and find a new location that will have to be set up to meet the needs of the business. In addition, there needs to be an accounting of the inventory and make sure that the items get back to the various artists and any balances due are covered.

I would like to take this opportunity to change the current dynamics. We need to create an active Board of Directors who can work together to organize the various aspects of The Wallflower Gallery and establish a better system to manage the whole operation. Part of this includes establishing a non-profit organization to work with tax-deductible donations.

The Wallflower Gallery brings to the table a strong talent base, a hefty database of connections, a good reputation, lots of experience and a kick-ass sound system. This is the starting point for the new phase of The Wallflower Gallery.

If The Wallflower Gallery fades, there is not another business of its kind waiting in the wings. We are not a simple CD store, art gallery, coffee shop or venue. We are more than those elements and as a community center we have always reached out to younger people to include them and feature their talents.

We have had people from all over the world come to The Wallflower Gallery and remark how unique and cozy the space is. People are always saying that there is nothing in Miami like it. At the same time, they wish they had a place like this where they lived.

This is our opportunity to come together and make something happen that will enrich our community in many ways. We are here to represent South Florida and our creative and progressive spirits, so let’s make it happen!

Let’s see what we can do together. More information will follow.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Thank you for your effort.
PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD & GET OTHERS INVOLVED!!
Hope all’s well.
Enjoy

PRESS RELEASE
Little Haiti Based Non-Profit Responds to Meek’s Call for Leadership
Art Studio Miami Increasing Capacity to Serve Youth Impacted by Haiti Earthquake

January 22, 2010, Miami, FL- Little Haiti based Art Studio Miami (ASM) is ramping up volunteer efforts in response to the anticipated influx of refugee children pouring into Miami from earthquake ravaged Haiti. ASM annually serves approximately 200 youth from the impoverished area of Little Haiti, and staff expect demand to increase dramatically in the coming months as children orphaned by the earthquake arrive in South Florida.

Kendrick Meek (D-FL) addressed news crews on Tuesday at the City of Miami’s staging area for Haiti relief, located directly across the street from ASM. Meek called for local organizations to provide leadership and support during the long period of rebuilding.

“South Florida is in this for the long haul; this will be the center for the recovery. . . and we are going to need leadership and understanding,” said Meek.

In response to Meek’s appeal, ASM volunteers and staff have begun working around the clock to prepare for additional students in the coming months. An army volunteer teaching artists and administrators have stepped up to provide holistic programming that will allow children impacted by the disaster to express their feelings through creative projects that prepare them for academic success.

“We must provide safe spaces where youth can heal and build solid foundations for better lives,” said Art Studio Miami Founder and lead volunteer, Rachel Hughes.

Since 2007, ASM has served over 500 youth from Little Haiti and Overtown using creative, art based projects to nurture students’ creative thinking abilities and prepare them for classroom settings and job situations. The organization partners with professional artists and community leaders to provide students with mentors and concrete tools to remain in school, and gain stable employment after graduation. Programs incorporate yoga, meditation, and deep breathing to help student’s develop positive ways to address the distressing living situations they face daily.

“In the wake of this disaster, people are forgetting that many Haitian people who have already immigrated to Miami are in desperately impoverished conditions, living below the poverty level, which in several cases means homelessness, no running water, and little to no food or water,” said Hughes.

According to Hughes, many of the youth served at ASM are struggling to obtain an education due to language barriers and health issues from lack of water, food and clean living conditions.

Hughes is calling on the Miami business and philanthropic communities to provide financial support and supplies for youth being served at Art Studio Miami. Donations of non perishable food, bottled water, and funding are being accepted to offset the costs of increasing programming. Donations can be made starting Monday at www.ASMHelpLittleHaiti.org or by calling the ASM office at 786-317-8118.

ASM volunteers are also on the ground in Haiti. A team of ASM volunteers left for Port-au-Prince early Tuesday morning to assisting directly with the relief efforts on the ground. Nearly all of the students served at ASM have family still in Haiti.

Art Studio Miami uses art as a tool for educational, emotional, and career development. Through the arts, we teach life skills to prepare students for successful futures. Youth in foster care, homeless situations, and extreme poverty depend on us to provide tools that empower them to gain stable employment and contribute to our community.

Art Studio Miami programs go far beyond art – they are lifelines out of poverty. According to the Florida 11th Judicial Circuit Court’s Juvenile Justice Board, one in three youth in the area served by ASM will be imprisoned by age twenty-one. Our programs focus on dismantling the ‘Cradle to Prison Pipeline’ by providing students with mentors and tools to create a future free from the crippling effects of poverty.

Hello Everyone!

Normally, we at Life Is Art are the ones providing services to the community, but today, we are in need of some services. We have some legal and tax documents to process and they need to be reviewed by the professionals.

We are in need of both a lawyer and a CPA that specialize in non-profits.

Holiday Greetings Everyone!

Just a quick note to let you know what is up with LIA. We are mostly out of town for the holidays and have spotty internet access, so if we are slow to reply to any emails or phone calls, we apologize in advance, but rest assured, we are still working hard to make Miami the art center of the world.

What a wild first year we have had! A dozen events, shows, fairs, networkers, seminars, and so much great art and fun. We are already looking forward to next year. We have the ESSENCE art party on Jan 9th, the Miami Beach Festival of the Arts on Jan 30th-31st, and maybe one or two other events in January. And we are planning larger events for later in the spring.

All of us here at Life Is Art wish you the best of holidays and an amazing and prosperous new year.

Sincerely,
James Echols and the whole Life Is Art team
