Received a very cool call via the website from a gallery in New York. The submission fee goes to support an arts non-profit, as well. Worth checking out, I think!

- – - – - – - – - – - -

Crossing Art Gallery is seeking submissions for “Going Green II”, the second annual juried group exhibition of local and international artists that will be on view at Crossing Art from June 14 – July 14, 2012.

In 2011, over 50 international and local artists applied; 6 were selected and exhibited their artwork as part of the first “Going Green” exhibition. Two award recipients were chosen, each receiving a solo exhibition. Susan Evans Grove, one of the award recipients last year, recently held her solo exhibition at Crossing Art, Material Reflections, which received great reviews and success.

This year, from the artists selected for the “Going Green II” exhibition, one artist will be chosen to have a solo exhibition at Crossing Art in 2013, receiving potential representation and a cash prize. Proceeds collected from the “Going Green II” Open Call application fees are given directly to support the non-profit organization, Queens Council on the Arts. QCA provides support to arts organizations and individual artists in presenting their culturally diverse programs for the benefit of the community.

“Going Green” is now an annual exhibition that supports not only an eco-friendly environment but raises issues about the current trends and future fate of urban landscapes. “Going Green” started as an Open Call to artists to apply to be considered for the exhibition, presenting innovative artworks and ideas that integrate natural systems with human patterns while celebrating continuity, uniqueness and place making. We are looking for local and international artists, architects, and designers to submit either artworks that explore contemporary meanings of “green”, whether relating to past, present and/ or what the future holds for the environment in general.

Work submitted should have the power to transform, inspire and/ or promote public awareness of green initiatives. Themes can range from the meaning of the color green to the green political party to issues concerning eco-systems, conservation, recycling and sustainability to what green cities might look like or what constitute a green lifestyle. All creative persons are invited to submit any artwork or proposal that evokes some form or concept of “green”. All media is acceptable including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, performance, installation, video and sculpture.

The Jurors:
Regina Forlenza, Visitor Services Coordinator of the Queens Botanical Garden
Derrick Meade, Freelancer at Metropolis Magazine and Open Space Institute McHenry Award Grantee at the Glynwood Institute for Sustainable Food and Farming
Brian Tate, President of The Tate Group, Co-Founder of Curate NYC and Co-Developer/ Producer of QAX 2012
Catherine Lee, Owner & Executive Director, Crossing Art Gallery, New York & Shanghai.
Hong Yee Lee, Executive Director, Queens Council of the Arts

Please submit an application form, CD and the entry fee of $30. Download the application form, which includes the checklist of requirements to be placed on a readable CD from www.crossingart.com – see “Exhibitions” – > “Open Call Submission” and follow instructions.

Received this fun call from our good friends over at the Lunch Box Gallery. Jaime Ferreyros has shown his iphonography with Life Is Art, as well. Really good folks! If you think it is something that might be for you, definitely check it out!

The Lunch Box Gallery
310 NW 24th St.
Miami, FL 33127

The Lunch Box Gallery, in collaboration with iPhoneographer Jaime Ferreyros, is pleased to announce the call for submissions for its new show “iPhoneography: Updated Visual Dialogs”. The exhibit will be displayed from March 10th to April 7th, 2012.

For the show, The Lunch Box Gallery is aiming to explore the social phenomenon of iPhoneography as a personal tool globally used to generate visual content, be shared and therefore, communicate. Here, the images many times meticulously conceived, some others more intuitively taken – yet all intentionally post-produced – are intended as mirrors of the user’s everyday life; a visual diary of the individual that can become an open book to their interests, curiosities, ideas, intimacy or even artistic take.

As an enabler for creative communication, iPhoneography has become a new medium for massive dialog, where images taken and edited with the iPhone are openly shared, sometimes instantly and some other times preceded by a complex creative process; regardless, is undeniable that all of these images project a part of the user’s self.
The exhibition “iPhoneography: Updated Visual Dialogs” as a whole will be an integral, heterogeneous and diverse expression of that avalanche of pixels that are being registered and shared in modern times; yet, in this immensity, every picture in the show becomes a window, a glimpse of the iPhoneographer’s vision, sensitivity and everyday life.

“iPhoneography: Updated Visual Dialogs” is inspired by Chase Jarvis famous quote “The Best Camera is the One That’s With You” ™. Prove it!

Eligibility and Restrictions:
These are the general guidelines for the show:

- The call for entries is open to all iPhoneographers, both professionals and amateurs, emerging and established, national and international over 18 years of age.
– Pictures must be taken and edited on the iPhone (not on any other device).
– iPhoneographers can send from 1 to 3 images per submission. You can apply more than once.
– All iPhoneographers will be automatically accepted to be featured in the gallery, joining this collective representation of the massive use of the medium; yet, at least 1 out of 3 photographs by every iPhoneographer will be printed and shown.

Theme:
Open. Send us your best shots! We are open to previous or new works, and they can be observational, conceptual, abstract, figurative, documentary, artistic, curious, sensorial, spontaneous or deeply-thought. Some examples, just to mention some topics, may include: still life, urban experiences, moments, landscapes, portraits, shapes, architecture, people, objects, actions, textures, etc. Yet, we will not accept family photography (meaning the typical “Say cheese!” image), pets photography or self-portraits (unless it’s truly something unique). Be creative! Show us what this imaginative and innovative outlet is all about.

Entry Fees:
A non-refundable entry fee of $15.00 is required for submitting up to 3 JPGs. You can submit more than once. Payment should be solely made via PayPal.

For the full Guidelines, please visit www.thelunchboxgallery.com, and then click on “Call for Entries” tab.

Received this call for help from Bibi Andrade. It is originally from the Wallflower Gallery. For those that do not know, the Wallflower has been an alternative culture bastion for the past 13 years in downtown Miami. They are in danger of closing down permanently, if something is not done. The building is being torn down and they need to move. They are having an organizational meeting on February 1, 2010. If you can help, please do what you can.

The Wallflower Gallery Organizational Meeting 02-01-10
WE NEED TO MOVE!!

Hello, Everybody, how’s it going? I wanted to reach out and see what we can do together to save and revitalize The Wallflower Gallery. This is a group project, so if we want to have an artistic and creative community space in Miami, The Wallflower Gallery can be that platform.

I was recently informed by the landlord that he plans to tear down the building as soon as possible – he mentioned April, but I think we can delay it if we can get some money to him. This money will buy us the time to transition smoothly.

For almost 13 years, The Wallflower Gallery has stood as a place for musicians to play, for poets to share their poems, for visual artists to display their pieces, for independent film makers to showcase films and videos, for actors to act, as well as host a larger assortment of creative showcases. In addition, we have worked with a variety of community organizations to help with local issues, programs for young people, alternative transportation, animal rights, environmental causes, marijuana laws reform, secular humanism, electoral campaigns and many other causes. Even now as we are struggling to keep the business alive, we are giving support to the people of Haiti and we have hosted a collection event – overall it is about compassion. Now it is time to focus a campaign on The Wallflower Gallery.

I am calling for an Organizational Meeting on Monday, February 1 – 7:00 p.m. to discuss what we can do to bring ideas together. I will lay out the details of the situation and see what we as a group can do with suggestions. Bring your cash, checkbooks and credit cards to contribute some financial support. Donations can also go through PayPal on our website – www.wallflowergallery.com – other information will be posted there as well. If we don’t get the financial resources to make this happen, it won’t work.

Now the large task at hand is to generate money to cover the expenses in the current location and find a new location that will have to be set up to meet the needs of the business. In addition, there needs to be an accounting of the inventory and make sure that the items get back to the various artists and any balances due are covered.

I would like to take this opportunity to change the current dynamics. We need to create an active Board of Directors who can work together to organize the various aspects of The Wallflower Gallery and establish a better system to manage the whole operation. Part of this includes establishing a non-profit organization to work with tax-deductible donations.

The Wallflower Gallery brings to the table a strong talent base, a hefty database of connections, a good reputation, lots of experience and a kick-ass sound system. This is the starting point for the new phase of The Wallflower Gallery.

If The Wallflower Gallery fades, there is not another business of its kind waiting in the wings. We are not a simple CD store, art gallery, coffee shop or venue. We are more than those elements and as a community center we have always reached out to younger people to include them and feature their talents.

We have had people from all over the world come to The Wallflower Gallery and remark how unique and cozy the space is. People are always saying that there is nothing in Miami like it. At the same time, they wish they had a place like this where they lived.

This is our opportunity to come together and make something happen that will enrich our community in many ways. We are here to represent South Florida and our creative and progressive spirits, so let’s make it happen!

Let’s see what we can do together. More information will follow.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Thank you for your effort.
PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD & GET OTHERS INVOLVED!!
Hope all’s well.
Enjoy

A new organization trying to get a large group of artists together for mutual benefit. Read over the release and see if it is for you! Jorge is also a friend and supporter of Life Is Art, so be sure to say hi when you see him and one of our events and I am sure he would be happy to speak with you in person about their movement.

Press Release
Have artists painted themselves into a corner?
August 10th Miami Florida USA
http://www.lnypmf.org

Lower Not Your Pants My Friends (LNYPMF) is forming a strategic alliance of artists with a very specific goal – Make Art a Profitable Endeavor!

LNYPMF will seek to unite around 3000 paying members. The allegiance will provide a stable platform from which to launch modern business campaigns and sustain a network of exclusive member-only galleries situated in major metropolises around the world.

LNYPMF predicts the main obstacle to achieving these goals may stem from the artists themselves and have roots dating back to the 19th century when disillusioned artists became outcasts giving birth to a new element of society- the Bohemians.

Artists also have a tendency to shy away from seemingly complex business undertakings though hurdling that obstacle shouldn’t be a problem because marrying the artist to a myriad of new business tasks is far from the objective. In fact, LNYPMF feels that artist participation in sales or management is one of the biggest mistakes artist co-ops make.

If enough forward thinking individuals can be made to understand that the artistic vision need not be compromised in exchange for success, the art world will experience yet another major revolution, this time placing the artists in control over their own destiny.

Are there 3000 artists on Planet Earth that want to live a better life? That is the first question that needs to be answered so a web site with a demographics form has been setup at http://www.lnypmf.org. Interested artists should fill out this form, the final tally will determine whether or not the LNYPMF program is initiated.

Sadly this won’t benefit all artists. Business is a competitive arena and the idea is to gain the edge however several thousand artists could thrive in a self sustaining relationship with structured growth doing nothing more than what they do now, create art.

So, here is an interesting call. You don’t see many calls for curators. But our friends at Supermarket are indeed looking for freelance curators to produce shows at a large venue that they represent. I have been there and can say it is a very nice place with a big interior and a great yard. And Supermarket is a very good organization, from my experience. So, if this is your thing, definitely get in touch with them and see if it is for you.

Dear Life Is Art Artists & Fans,

Some good news! David Lombardi, our erstwhile (and probably future) venue sponsor, the man who kindly donated that awesome space for our first event at 120 NW 25th Street, has decided to turn it into a co-op gallery!

What he is going to do is section it up into display spaces, much like we did for Life Is Art. Each space will be 12 x 12 feet, just like our spaces were. Artists can then rent the spaces on a monthly basis to display their work. Rent is $450.00 per month, plus a $75.00 utility fee. That is only $525 per month to have your own gallery.

You can see some photos of the space below.

This is not a work-space like Art/Center or Bakehouse, but an actual gallery space. That means you will be displaying and selling your work there. It is a co-op, so you will be surrounded by other artists, and maybe a few dealers, too. There will even be a communal kitchen and office space

As you all know, one of the most important tools in selling your work is getting it out on display. This gives you a chance to do so on your own terms. Wynwood is a fast-growing arts area, so this is in a prime location.

One more thing. David has kindly offered to donate a portion of each rental that we bring to Life Is Art to help us further our mission. This money will go directly to producing more events and promoting the Miami arts community. So, please be sure to mention that you heard about it from us.

For all the details, contact David Lombardi at david@lombardiproperties.com. You can see their website here. We think this is a great opportunity and definitely can say that David is a true supporter of the arts.
