Life Is Art Creative Connections #13 at Sol Gallery at CANDO Arts Co-op on Tuesday, May 17, 2011.

The Law Office of William Peña Wells is a South Florida civil practice firm that offers a full range of legal services to a diversified client base, including arts and entertainment clients, The firm provides strategic marketing advice, licensing, contract negotiation and review to individuals, corporate clients, and nonprofit agencies in the United States and Europe. Mr. Wells sits on several nonprofit boards and is Legal Counsel to Artists for A Cause, a South Florida nonprofit group dedicated to providing opportunities for artists to contribute to social causes.

This seminar focused on the legal issues facing artists, particularly contracts. We know many artists who have been ripped off because they did not understand, or even read, the contracts they signed. Do not lose your art! This is a serious issue and one we are going to tackle for this seminar. Mr. Wells is going to break it down and give you some simple examples of how you can protect yourself. Mr. Wells understands these issues very well, being both a lawyer and an artist. Please bring any other legal questions you may have and we will try to cover as many as possible.

The thought-provoking work of the 10 resident artists and guest artists is showcased in 5000 square feet of gallery space. The historic building, known as Palm Court, was previously occupied by the W Hotel’s administrative offices, which converted perfectly into a main gallery space, and smaller rooms for studios or private exhibition spaces flanking the main gallery. The main gallery space named Sol Gallery, is used for rotating exhibits comprised of member shows, open calls, classes, and for special events.

The Palm Court building has recently been opened up further to include the Howard Austin Feld gallery, and Art 33139 which was founded and is directed by Tiffany Levy.

Greg Pitts Biography:
Greg Pitts started out life at a disadvantage. Being born to a single parent and growing up without a father figure made life less than ideal. He did not meet his father until the age of 12. As a young teen, he exhibited artistic capabilities, however the lack of understanding and from his family lead to discouragement. He continued to strive to express himself artistically. He purchased his first camera on lay-a-way from a camera store in his hometown.

His artistic eye and fashion sense while a senior in high school lead to him was offered admission to a prestigious fashion design school, but because of stereotypical attitudes, students at school would call him a nerd and at home no one would assist him in the application process, stating that “that kind of stuff is for sissies,” Discouraged, he graduated without any formal plans. Later, he joined the Army in order to provide for his soon to be born son. Despite this difficult start in life, he continued to express his artistic side. He’s also an awarding winning filmmaker and photographer having taken photos of celebrities from Sean “P. Diddy” Coombs to Mary J. Blige, Tom Joyner, Robin Thicke and the late Teena Marie.

Greg Pitts abstract artwork has been compared to that of abstract expressionist artist Jackson Pollock. He is a featured artist at the G.A.B Studio in the Wynwood Art District in Miami, Florida.

Mr. Pitts first gained national recognition by making the top story on Google News on May 9, 2009 with a feature article being published about his work in EV Living Magazine.

He was one of 20 national semi-finalist photographers selected by W Magazine for their “Obsession” photographic contest in 2010. His artwork has sold in Berlin, San Francisco, Vienna Austria, Chicago and Ohio and is currently on exhibit in the Netherlands and in Stanford a town on the Cape Whale Coast of South Africa.

Mr. Pitts participated in Miami Art Basel 2010 and was successful-selling 3 of his original paintings. He can be contacted by email at blkjacksonpollock@bellsouth.net. Some of his abstract art can be viewed at www.BlackJacksonPollock.com.
