Artist as an Entrepreneur Institute Returns to South Florida

Broward Cultural Division, The Community Partnership for Arts and Culture (CPAC), and ArtServe, Inc. announce The Artist as an Entrepreneur Institute (AEI) for South Florida artists to be presented on four Saturdays in June 2012, at ArtServe, Inc., 1350 East Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale.

The AEI is a course of study designed to assist individual artists of all disciplines (visual, musicians, writers, media, theater, performing arts) by cultivating and advancing their business skills, and is designed at strengthening their operating infrastructure and expanding their businesses. The course has been refreshed this year with a new format, and new modules. To date, 300 South Florida artists have graduated from the Institute. AEI will be offered as 20 classes convening during full-day sessions (9:00 am – 6:00 pm) on June 2, 9, 16, 2012 and a Business Plan Clinic and Workshop on June 23, 2012 (9:00 am – 2:00 pm).

Registrants will receive an AEI course book, an indispensable resource for artists. Developed by CPAC, the course book features exercises and readings to prepare for each session, and is tailored to the specific needs of artist entrepreneurs.

The Business Plan Clinic guides participants through preparation of a simple business plan, an essential tool for any artist. In addition, participants will learn how to work effectively with lenders to obtain financial support through the Artist Micro Credit Program, a community-based revolving loan program, designed to assist resident Broward County practicing professional and emerging artists.

Designed to help artists operate in the marketplace more successfully, the AEI course curriculum covers all aspects of developing an artistic business. It helps artists identify and develop their personal brand, develop strategies for communicating with target markets, raise capital and identify a variety of tools for protecting one’s work legally.

The AEI curriculum offers critical support for artists, enabling them to contribute to strengthening the vitality of the larger urban arts and culture sector. Sessions include a mix of lectures, panels, group discussions and practical exercises. Now in its sixth year, the 2012 program has been updated and refreshed with a new format, new modules and new instructors.

“Art works” is a declaration that with two million full-time artists and 5.7 million arts-related jobs in this country, arts jobs are real jobs that are part of the real economy. Art workers pay taxes, and art contributes to economic growth, neighborhood revitalization, and the livability of American towns and cities,” says Chairman, National Endowment for the Arts, Rocco Landesman.

Hello Life Is Art Friends!

Another personal note from your head honcho guy here at the massive Life Is Art corporate headquarters (aka the coffee shop), James Echols. I am very excited that we just hooked up another amazing opportunity for our artist friends. Below you will find the solicitation for donations for the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce 90th Annual Dinner Gala and Silent Auction, which will be held at the Miami Beach Convention Center on Saturday, June 2th, 2012.

You know, normally I am not really in favor of asking artists to donate work. I know how much effort each piece takes, and the usual return is very low. However, this Gala includes approximately 1200 of the heavy-hitters from Miami Beach and around south Florida. These are people with real money, many of whom are avid art lovers. This really is great exposure. Plus, it benefits the Miami Beach Education Foundation, helping to support our youth.

Life Is Art is working with the Chamber to showcase some fantastic work by south Florida artists. We are going to have our own special area within the auction just for our artists! It will be branded with the Life Is Art banner and a portion of the sales will go to support Life Is Art’s mission to promote the arts in south Florida! We want this to make a big impact on the attendees, showing them how much great talent we have right here.

We are looking for pieces of at least $500 value to be donated. Our first annual Juried Painting Show will expose and highlight the exceptional work of local, national and international painters. Three professional artists (TBA) will jury the competition and will be responsible for awarding prizes. Applications are being accepted now for the opportunity to participate in this amazing event. The official opening will take advantage of the renouned Wynwood Art District’s Second Saturday Art Walk where hundreds of art goers filter through the gallery. The VIP opening reception will take place on Friday, July 13, 2012 and remain on display for the duration of three weeks.

I wanted to talk to you a bit about our upcoming Art Show. It is different than some of our previous events. As you know, in the past, in addition to seminars and art fairs, we have produced a lot of art parties, networkers and such. These are great ways to get some exposure and introduce new people to art. They are fun and good for socializing. They are easy to produce and we can do quite a few of them. Unfortunately, they are not great for sales.

We will be doing more of those in the future, for sure, but we are also working on new types of events. You know we just completed the fantastic PhilanthroFest, which was really beyond our wildest dreams (despite the weather). That is definitely planned to be an annual event.

Now, we are working on a fine contemporary art show. The goal of this is to sell your artwork. The goal is to introduce collectors to some of the best south Florida artists that they might never have heard of. The art lovers and buyers need to know that there are amazing artists full of passion and powerful stories working and living right here in south Florida. That is the goal.

To that end we partnered with our good friends and supporters at Robin Rile Fine Art. Reed V. Horth, the founder, is a long time gallerist, art dealer and curator. His experience in finding the right collectors for the right art is essential to mentoring and exposing emerging artists. Not only that, he is just a really nice guy! And his wife is as intelligent as she is charming and beautiful. Really nice people to work with.

We have found a beautiful location for this show. Dan Sehres has graciously provided his villa in South Beach as the host venue. He is a true supporter of the arts. This gives us a perfect place to showcase the art.

Plus, well-known philanthropist and art lover, Carl Kruse has offered to help us with outreach to potential collectors. This is another key component to this show.

We are really working hard to make sure we maximize the sales potential for this event. We brought together a good team to enhance our chances of success. We are reaching out to collectors and potential collectors through various channels. We are taking our time to make this a really nice, upscale event.

As was stated in previous emails, this show is in two parts. The first half is an upscale, invitation-only show. This is to facilitate sales. Soft music and light drinks enhance the ambiance and allow for conversation. This is when the collectors that we have invited are able to peruse the work and learn more about the artists. Our team will be ready to answer any questions.

After that portion is over, the party starts! We are opening the show to everyone later in the evening. We want to encourage the next generation of collectors, as well, so we are going to ramp it up and bring on the fun. Live music, open bar, passed tasty bites and some other surprises make this an exciting evening. We are asking for a small donation to help support our mission of supporting the arts, but it is well worth it!

The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale, South Florida’s premier retail destination, invites local not-for-profits and arts related vendors to participate in its “Spring for the Arts” one day showcase on Sat., June 2 from 11 am to 3 p.m. This already successful effort will unite the arts community with a one-day showcase of promotional displays and performing and visual arts experiences.

Local not-for-profit art organizations are encouraged to be part of this effort at The Galleria to promote upcoming shows, classes and volunteer/donor needs. All groups will also be invited to The Galleria’s “Spring for the Arts” kick-off fundraiser on May 31 at Truluck’s Ft. Lauderdale to benefit Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theatre and to honor arts supporters and advocates, including Holly Bodenweber and Steve Hudson of the Hudson Family Foundation, Richard Jay Simon, Barbara O’ Keefe and Myra Weaver.

OVERVIEW
This will be an art event in two parts. The first half, 4:00pm to 7:30pm is invitation only and targeted on up-market art collectors and buyers. Robine Rile Fine Art and Life Is Art will identify those persons through various channels and reach out to them directly. The art show portion will include soft music and light beverages to help set the mood. During this part, we will focus on art sales and educating buyers on the quality of work available from south Florida artists.

The second half, 7:30pm – 11:00pm is open to everyone and is more of a celebration of the arts in south Florida. For a $20 door donation, it includes a live band, sponsored bar and light bites. The goal of this portion of the event is to expose young professional potential art collectors to the work produced in south Florida.

This is a show for real art lovers; those interested in learning more and purchasing work from artists based in south Florida. While there are many amazing fine contemporary artists practicing in south Florida, many collectors do not realize it. Not because of any lack on their part, but because of a lack of opportunities. How are they to find the new masters with so few chances to see them? The Life Is Art Summer Show and Celebration connects south Florida art lovers with south Florida artists.

The Villa is a beautiful two-story venue in the heart of South Beach. Just blocks from Lincoln, it includes a lovely enclosed courtyard area with a pool. The event takes place both inside and outside.

APPLICATION DETAILS
Application Deadline: May 19, 2012
There is NO application fee.
Each artist may submit up to five (5) pieces for consideration. The Jury will choose up to three (3) of those pieces to display.
Applicants will be notified no later than May 26, 2012 if they have been accepted.
We are looking for work priced between $2000 and $9000. We may make exceptions for exceptional work outside of that range. Please choose pieces to submit appropriately.
A sales fee of 40% will be assessed for each sale, please price accordingly.
Be sure to submit the pieces you want to show. Substitutions will not be allowed.
Jury consists of James Echols and Annette Peikert from Life Is Art, Reed Horth and Kathryn Barrow-Horth from Robin Rile Fine Art, Dan Sehres and Carl Kruse.

Artists will be hanging their own work or will need to send a representative to do so.
Each artist will be given a designated area within the venue to display their work.
Arrive between 12pm and 2pm to begin setup on day of show.
Professionals will be available to assist with hanging.
Any unsold art may be collected directly after the show or at a later date, as agreed upon by both parties.
Art must arrive at the venue ready for hanging or installation.
Robin Rile Fine Art will handle all sales and transactions. A significant portion of the proceeds will be donated to Life Is Art in support of their mission to promote the arts in south Florida.
Artists are encouraged, but not required to be in attendance of the event to meet potential buyers.
Life Is Art / Robin Rile Fine Art reserves the right to revise the price of artwork upwards, if we deem it underpriced.

By agreeing to set up at Life Is Art, the above agrees to protect, keep and save Life Is Art, Robin Rile Fine Art, Dan Sehres, Carl Kruse, and all their officers and staff, forever harmless from any damage, loss, cost, liability, or expense that arises from their being at this event. This agreement covers full setup, run of the event, and takedown. By signing below, you indicate your approval of all information contained.

Call for Art – “Figurative” Juried Art Competition

Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery announces a call for entries with the theme “Figurative” for a juried art competition for the month of May 2012. The gallery would like for all 2D artists (including photography) to send us your best interpretation of the theme “Figurative” by depicting the human form or human features. “Figurative” is considered to be figures, forms and faces for inclusion into the gallery’s June 2012 online Group Art Exhibition. We will accept art on this subject that is either representational or abstract, but please, do not submit any erotic art.
