The Public Library for Artists: A Primer
Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010 at 6pm in the ArtCenter Gallery 800 Lincoln Road

“The public library is where place and possibility meet.” – Stuart Dybek

Public libraries were Miami’s original alternative exhibition spaces. Since the 1960s, local, national and international artists and curators have worked with the Miami-Dade Public Library System. As well-used civic and community spaces, libraries can challenge artists to experiment and think about their work in new and different ways. The Miami-Dade Public Library System offers artists not only exhibition opportunities, but free access to many other resources:
arts, image, and grant databases
the Vasari Project, an archive for research and documentation of visual art in Miami
books, magazines, DVDs, and downloadable video, film and music
information about legal and business resources of interest to artists
As Library Curator, Denise Delgado oversees the Art Services and Exhibitions Department at MDPLS, manages an exhibition program for the 47-branch system, develops public programs, acquires new work for the Library’s permanent art collection, and oversees its care and management. At this informal presentation, we’ll talk about the opportunities and resources available to artists through MDPLS, its yearly Call for Proposals, and more.

Art and Ideas: Exhibiting at the Public Library

Public libraries were Miami’s original alternative exhibition spaces. Since the 1960s, local, national and international artists and curators have worked with the Miami-Dade Public Library System. Public libraries are well-used civic and community spaces. As the context for art and exhibitions, libraries can challenge artists to experiment and think about their work in new and different ways.

The Miami-Dade Public Library System accepts proposals for exhibitions, performance art and site-specific installations in all media. Its exhibition program includes contemporary art, material culture, folk art and art education (for example, exhibitions of student work organized by teachers or other educators), as well as exhibitions in the humanities about literary, historical, cultural, and interdisciplinary topics.

As Library Curator, Denise Delgado oversees the Art Services and Exhibitions Department at MDPLS, manages an exhibition program for the 48-branch system, develops public programs, acquires new work for the Library’s permanent art collection, and oversees its care and management. At this SeminArt, we’ll talk about the opportunities and resources available to artists through MDPLS, the upcoming Call for Proposals (deadline: March 10), the exhibition process, and more.

Denise will be available for specific questions at the end of the program. Stick around to meet other artists and community leaders—LegalArt SeminArts are great networking opportunities!

SEMINAR: “Do-It-Yourself: Using Video to Gain Exposure and Build Community,” with video marketing expert Jessica Kizorek.

Video cameras are cheaper and more integrated in daily life than ever before. Just as digital photos have proliferated the way we communicate, video will reach a huge saturation rate in 2010.

Learn how to use the technology at your finger tips to create video communications that impact and build relationship with your target market. Watch the coolest gadgets in action and see successful case studies that increased sales by employing online video.

Video increases response rates when you learn how to use it to your advantage. YouTube has exploded as an online portal, but other social media platforms – Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Ning — make it easier than ever to send and receive videos through the Internet.

The seminar is free for both members and nonmembers; RSVP to enjoy a free drink and appetizers.

The result is a thrilling and provocative compilation by an array of artists largely unknown to South Florida audiences whose explorations examine both our shared environment and a more intimate sense of self.

PressitOn Art Gallery is deeply committed to humanitarian causes that seek to ease the plight of the disenfranchised and vulnerable. As such, we donate a portion of the proceeds raised during each exhibition to a charitable organization. ArtCenter was established in 1984 by a small group of artists who envisioned a potential cultural renaissance in what was then a blighted and vacant Lincoln Road. In partnership with the City of Miami Beach, the group obtained Federal Community Development Block Grant funds to acquire properties and create an artists’ colony in 21 storefront spaces. Since then, ArtCenter has become the cultural and economic catalyst for the revitalization of the Lincoln Road neighborhood and South Beach. In 1986, the City of Miami Beach recognized the success of our founders’ vision by designating ArtCenter’s three-block area as the Lincoln Road Arts District.
Today, Lincoln Road is a lively magnet for culture, entertainment, retail business and community activity, and Miami Beach is arguably the cultural center of South Florida. Now recognized as one of Miami-Dade County’s major cultural institutions, ArtCenter operates from its three historic buildings at 800, 810 and 924 Lincoln Road. The nearly 60,000 square foot campus encompasses 52 artists’ studios, exhibition galleries, art education classrooms and administrative offices. Of the 7.2 million international and national visitors to Miami/South Beach annually, hundreds of thousands walk down Lincoln Road and view ArtCenter’s display windows and exhibitions.
For its role in the shaping of South Florida’s cultural landscape, ArtCenter has received recognition from local media such as New Times, which in 1997 called us the “best gallery in Miami”, and from national media such as The Wall Street Journal, which in 1998 reported that our “presence has transformed the area…into a hub of commerce.” In its May and November 1999 issues featuring the Greater Miami art community, Art in America magazine highlighted ArtCenter’s “impact on the Miami art scene and its emerging profile” describing ArtCenter as “a gathering place for talented and ambitious young Miami artists.”

ArtCenter/South Florida, a not-for-profit organization, is recognized as a Miami-Dade county major cultural Institution and a city of Miami Beach Anchor cultural Institution. Programming is made possible through grants from the Miami-Dade county Department of cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs council, the Miami-Dade mayor and Board of county commissioners; Tropiculture, Greater Miami; the city of Miami Beach cultural Arts council; the city of Miami Beach community Development Block Grant; the Miami Beach mayor and city commissioners and the state of Florida, Florida Department of state, Division of cultural Affairs, and the Florida Arts Council; the Dade Community Foundation; and the Registration #sc-06163.
